World Expo, Olympic Games, and FIFA World Cup are the three largest events in the world. May be you’re more familiar with the last two, but to tell you the truth, World expo has a longer history compared with the other two. Actually it also influenced the development of several aspects of society including art and design education, international trade and relations, and even tourism. Also, it was the precedent for the many international exhibitions, later called “World’s Fairs”, which were subsequently held to the present day. Let’s talk more details about it.
1. World Expo: a special Exhibition
The highest level for exhibition
The World Exposition is an international grand exhibition which held by the government of the host country, and participated by other countries and international occasions. It’s the highest level for exhibition in the world. At the very beginning of expo when the transportation was not very convenient, it still attracted many countries to participate. Nowadays the expo can even attracts hundreds of countries which is a very splendid scale.
2. Registered Expo and recognized Expo
Presently, there are two types of world expositions: registered and recognized.
Registered exhibitions are the biggest category events. Previously, registered expositions were called “Universal Expositions”. Even though this name lingers on in public memory, it is no longer in use as an official term. At registered exhibitions, participants generally build their own pavilions. They are therefore the most extravagant and most expensive expos. Their duration may be between six weeks and six months. Since 1995, the interval between two registered expositions has been at least five years.
Recognized expositions are smaller in scope and investments and generally shorter in duration; between three weeks and three months. Previously, these expositions were called "International or Specialized Expositions" but these terms are no longer used officially. The organizers must build pavilions for the participating states, free of rent, charges, taxes and expenses. The largest country pavilions may not exceed 1,000 m². Only one recognized exhibition can be held between two registered exhibitions.
3. The pageant of global economy, technology, and culture
The world expo can gain a high praise not only because it’s title and scale, but also it builds a stage for showing the huge progress in economy, technology, and culture of human being. It recorded the steps of world civilization. From Industrialization to the National branding. The world expo is becoming a pageant of global economy, technology, and culture.
The concept of World Expo: understanding, communication, gathering and co-operation.
The History of World Expo
The beginning of world expo was related to the industry revolution. Actually, expo originates from the fairs of the middle century’s merchants. Later it turned out to be larger and larger. Not until 1851 did the expo open a new time page. The steam engine and spinning machine has taken the place of hand working, and they were the star exhibits in the early expose.
The first World Expo—The World Exposition London 1851
The formal name of the first expo was” Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations”. It was an idea of Prince Albert, Queen Victoria’s husband, and was the first international exhibition of manufactured products. This was a pavilion for displaying the exhibits, later it became the most impassive exhibit because of the elegant design. Numbering 13,000 in total they included a Jacquard loom, an envelope machine, kitchen appliances, steel-making displays and a reaping machine which was sent from the United States
