The French Concession is the area of Shanghai once designated for the French before during the colony times. Today, the area's central Huaihai Rd is a busy shopping street, but the tree-lined avenues and their many Tudor mansions still retain an air of the "Paris of the East".
In the morning, we will visit the Xintiandi which is a popular spot for young people and the tourists from both home and abroad. It is a place where you can find a lot of restaurants and clubs. Besides these pubs you can also see some traditional Shanghai-style lodgings (Shikumen) which reveals a unique style of European and Chinese design. There is a nice small museum, showing the configuration and interior of a recreated 1930s shikumen house.
During the World War II, the Jewish people in Austria and German are badly persecuted by the Hitler Tyranny. Jewish people were waiting in a long queue outside the foreign embassies for a visa to leave the country, but none of them but China accept them to immigrate to its land. Those Jewish people come to Shanghai and set up their own residential area where in that time was really a paradise for them. Those Jewish people also bring their culture to China. Today, when we come back the Jewish Site, the history come back again.
